Las Vegas, Nev. – Daniel G. Bogden, United States Attorney for Nevada, and Paul Rozario, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the DEA for Nevada, encourage residents of Nevada to turn in their expired, unwanted, and unused prescription medications tomorrow, September 29, 2012, during "National Prescription Drug Take-Back" day, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The year 2009 marked the first year that more people in the United States died from drug overdoses than from automobile accidents," said U.S. Attorney Bogden. "And this happened primarily because our nation is abusing prescription drugs at unprecedented levels. The most successful way to prevent drug overdose is to prevent drug use in the first place. Disposing of your unused and expired drugs helps prevent teens or others from obtaining them."

Persons can take their unwanted medications to one of approximately 30 authorized collection sites across Nevada between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. The service is free and anonymous. Tablets, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms of medications will be collected. Intravenous solutions, injectables, and syringes will not be accepted. Collection sites will be located in Boulder City, Carson City, Dayton, Fallon, Fernley, Gardnerville, Henderson, Las Vegas, Nellis AFB, North Las Vegas, Reno, Sparks, Virginia City, Wellington, Winnemucca, Yerington, and Zephyr Cove. This is the DEA's fifth time collecting unused, unneeded, and expired prescription drugs. To date, the agency has received 1.5 million pounds or 774 tons of prescription drugs from the public.
