FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday June 18, 2012

Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced today the appointment of SARA L. SHUDOFSKY as the Chief of the Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.  Ms. SHUDOFSKY follows Andrew Schilling, who served as the Office’s Civil Division Chief since March 2010.  She will supervise all litigation for the Civil Division’s Units and further expand on the affirmative litigation work of the Civil Frauds Unit.

Ms. SHUDOFSKY returns to the Office from Spears & Imes, where she had been a partner specializing in complex commercial civil litigation and civil government investigations since 2009.  She joined the firm in 2007.

Ms. SHUDOFSKY served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York in the Civil Division from 1991 to 2007.  During her tenure, she served as the Chief Appellate Attorney, Deputy Chief of the Civil Division, and Chief of the Office's Civil Rights Unit.  She also handled several high profile matters, including the Office’s review of the Amadou Diallo shooting, and a Superfund contamination trial and settlement.  Ms. SHUDOFSKY received the Director's Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant United States Attorney in 1996 for her work in securing a judgment and injunctive relief, through trial and appeals in the Second Circuit, against the Village of Airmont for religious discrimination prohibited under the Fair Housing Act, and again in 2000 for her role in litigation and settlement with the New York Yankees for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  She also received the Henry L. Stimson Medal from the New York City Bar Association in 2000, and the Public Service Award from the New York County Lawyers’ Association in 1999.

Prior to her government service, Ms. SHUDOFSKY was a litigation associate at Kaye Scholer in New York.  She is a 1983 Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude graduate from the University of Pennsylvania and a 1986 graduate from New York University School of Law.

Mr. Bharara said of the appointment: "Sara Shudofsky is an immensely talented lawyer who served in virtually every conceivable position of trust and leadership during her 16 years of outstanding service to the Office. She worked on matters large and small and brought characteristic intelligence, insight, and diligence to every one of them. We are extremely lucky to have her back, and I am confident that she will bring her usual excellence to her new post."
