Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, today announced that Samantha Dameron, age 31, of Cleveland, Ohio, has been indicted for escaping from federal custody.
The indictment charges Dameron with escaping from the custody she was ordered to serve as result of her prior conviction in federal court for conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, and cocaine base. Dameron allegedly failed to report to Oriana House on November 1, 2011, as ordered as part of her sentence. Dameron remained at-large until she was apprehended on February 7, 2012, by the United States Marshal’s Service Northen Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Matthew W. Shepherd.
If convicted, the defendant’s sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including the defendant’s prior criminal record, if any, the defendant’s role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation. In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases will be less than the maximum.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
