A federal jury today convicted an East Cleveland man on all counts related to an armed carjacking last year in Warrensville Heights, said Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, and Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cleveland office.

Shaundelle Dial, 20, was convicted of carjacking and using a firearm during a crime of violence. He previously pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of ammunition related to this case.

“Our office places a high priority on prosecuting violent crimes,” Dettelbach said. “This case in an example of federal agencies and local police departments working together to take a violent criminal off the streets.”

Dial knowingly carried a firearm with the intent to cause death and serious bodily injury while taking a 2006 Mazda 6 by force on June 23, 2011. He used a firearm during the crime of violence and was later found in possession of ammunition despite a previous conviction for drug trafficking, according to court documents.

During the three-day trial, the victim testified he was eating his lunch in his car at the Green Road Park in Warrensville Heights when Dial pointed a gun at him and demanded all his money. The victim, who testified he “didn't want to die in his car,” got out of the car and tried to grab the gun. When he failed, he backed away, and Dial took off in the car, according to testimony.
Dial is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 15, 2013.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew B. Kall and David Ruiz following an investigation by the FBI Cleveland/Cuyahoga Violent Crimes Task Force, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office, the Warrensville Heights Police Department, the Cleveland Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
