COLUMBUS – Lamar L. Morris, 31, of Columbus was sentenced to 13 years in prison for holding a postal carrier at gunpoint while looking for drugs he thought the carrier was delivering.

Carter M. Stewart, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, Dugan Wong, Inspector in Charge, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and Acting Columbus Police Chief Stephen Gammill announced the sentence imposed on March 14 by U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley.

According to court documents, Morris approached a mail carrier on Columbus’ east side on March 24, 2011, brandished a handgun, and demanded that the carrier turn over a package of drugs he thought the carrier was delivering to a specific address. Morris forced the carrier at gunpoint to remove every item he had in the postal vehicle looking for the package containing the drugs. Once he was convinced the carrier did not have the package he was looking for, he left empty handed, returned to his car and drove away. Columbus Police officers arrested Morris on April 22, 2011.

Morris pleaded guilty on September 30, 2011 to one count of assault and attempted robbery of a U.S. Postal Service employee and one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.

Judge Marbley sentenced Morris to 72 months for the attempted robbery and 84 months for brandishing the firearm. The sentences are to be served consecutively.

Stewart commended the cooperative investigation by Columbus Police officers and U.S. Postal Inspectors, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney David Bosley, who prosecuted the case.
