COLUMBUS – Colin T. Reedy, 46, Bellingham, Washington was sentenced in U.S. District Court today to 48 months in prison, fined $5,000 and ordered to serve 300 hours of community service for buying a gun for another man to use in the murder of a Grove City man. Reedy was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service immediately after sentencing.
Carter M. Stewart, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, Edward J. Hanko, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Grove City Police Chief Steve Robinette, and Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Ron O’Brien announced the sentence handed down today by U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson.
Reedy pleaded guilty on December 20, 2011 to one count of making false statements in connection with the purchase of a firearm.
According to a document filed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah A. Solove prior to the sentencing, Reedy bought a 9 mm handgun in Seattle, Washington in November 2010 and signed the required documentation that he was purchasing the handgun for himself. A man who wanted to kill his business partner in Ohio asked Reedy to buy the gun on his behalf. The man was a college friend of Reedy’s. Reedy mailed the gun to the man, who lives in New Jersey.
The firearm was allegedly used to kill a Grove City man on March 10, 2011. The murder trial is pending before the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas.
Stewart commended the cooperative investigation by the FBI and Grove City Police, investigative assistance by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations, as well as the Assistant Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Marla Farbacher for their cooperation in the case.
