Three Sentenced for Participation in
Identity-Theft Ring
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – This week, United States District Court Judge Joe Heaton sentenced three defendants related to an Oklahoma City-based identity-theft ring, announced Sanford C. Coats, United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma. On Wednesday, TIFFANY DAWN TRAN, 22, of Oklahoma City, was sentenced to serve 38 months imprisonment for possession of stolen mail. On Thursday, JASON WADE SANDERS, 38, from Yukon, Oklahoma, and JUSTIN DEAN TYNER, 33, from Oklahoma City, were each sentenced to serve 60 months imprisonment for their participation in a conspiracy to commit crimes related to identity theft.
According to court records, the conspiracy started on Thanksgiving 2010 when thieves broke into several large cluster mailboxes on the south side of Oklahoma City. Sanders and Tyner used information from the stolen mail (such as checking account numbers and bank routing numbers on the bottom of checks) to manufacture counterfeit checks and create counterfeit drivers’ licenses bearing the names of the victims of mail theft. The counterfeit checks and fake IDs were used at various retailers to obtain merchandise, gift cards, and cash.
Following completion of their prison terms, all three defendants will be required to complete three years of supervised release and pay restitution to the victims as follows: Tran to pay $29,989.04, Sanders to pay $59,491.59, and Tyner to pay $33,039.53, jointly and severally. Reference is made to the indictments and court records for further information.
This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Lennington.
