PORTLAND, Ore. - U.S. District Judge Michael W. Mosman today sentenced Curtis Alan Purdy, 35, to 18 months in prison, to be followed by three years supervised release, for making a false report of consumer product tampering to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Purdy pleaded guilty in May 2012 to one count of making a false report of consumer product tampering. He admitted that in September 2011, he falsely reported to the FDA that his mother became ill after drinking from a tainted Crystal Geyer water bottle purchased at Albertsons. In fact, Purdy had filled the Crystal Geyer water bottle with rubbing alcohol, and watched his mother drink from the water bottle. When she became ill, he failed to disclose the contents of the water bottle to his mother or her doctors. In addition to filing a false report with the FDA, Purdy also contacted Crystal Geyer, requesting compensation.

"We take reports of consumer product tampering very seriously to prevent threats to the public's health and welfare," said U.S. Attorney Amanda Marshall. "The integrity of the reporting system is crucial to anti-tampering efforts, and those who knowingly make false reports will be prosecuted."

This case stemmed from an investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Criminal Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacie Beckerman.
