Braddock Man Sentenced On Drug And Weapons Convictions
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Acting United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar announced today, April 6, 2010 that on April 1, 2010, Anthony Leon Brookins, a resident of Braddock, Pennsylvania, was sentenced in federal court in Pittsburgh to 12 years in prison on his conviction of federal narcotics laws, to run concurrent to a sentence of 10 years for violating federal weapons laws.
United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti imposed the sentence on Brookins, age 27.
According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci, Brookins was convicted following a jury trial on May 15, 2009, of one count of possessing ammunition by a convicted felon, and one count of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture containing cocaine base.
Prior to imposing sentence, Judge Conti stated that although Brookins was a career offender under federal law, subject to a sentence of 360 months to life, that the sentence imposed reflected the seriousness of the offenses, and was sufficient but not greater than necessary for the crimes committed, noting his age and opportunity for rehabilitation.
Mr. Cessar commended detectives from the Allegheny County District Attorney's Violent Crimes Task Force, and Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Brookins.
