Postal Employee Sentenced To Time Served For Embezzling Funds

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Acting United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar announced today, April 7, 2010, that Brenda L. Barnett, a resident of West Sunbury, Butler County, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced in federal court in Pittsburgh to 5 months imprisonment (time served), 3 years supervised release and ordered her to pay $9,100.00 restitution to the United states Postal Service on her conviction of false entries and reports of money or securities, misappropriation of postal funds and theft of government money.

Senior United States District Judge Alan N. Bloch imposed the sentence on Barnett, age 44.

According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney James Y. Garrett, Barnett was an employee of the East Brady, Pennsylvania, Post Office, who embezzled funds received for the sale of money orders.  The total loss was approximately $9,100.

Mr. Cessar commended the United States Postal Inspection Service for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Barnett.
