Erie Man Sentenced To Prison For Possessing Stolen Firearm
ERIE, Pa. - Acting United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar announced today, March 2, 2010, that Jamario Rakeem Martin, a resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced in federal court in Erie to forty-two months in jail on his conviction of violating federal firearms laws.
United States District Judge Sean J. McLaughlin imposed the sentence on Martin, age 20.
According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney Christine A. Sanner, Martin possessed a firearm while being a convicted felon. Sanner stated that Martin was encountered during a traffic stop that was initiated by the Erie Police Department. During the stop, officers found a loaded firearm concealed in Martin's waistband. The firearm that he possessed was stolen, and its serial number had been obliterated.
Prior to imposing sentence, Judge McLaughlin noted that Martin had a significant "track record" of possessing firearms unlawfully. Judge McLaughlin also remarked on the "pandemic" of gun violence in the county. He stated that defendants convicted of gun crimes in this city would face "significant" sentences.
Mr. Cessar commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Erie Bureau of Police for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Martin.
