Felon Sentenced To Prison For Illegally Possessing Handgun
PITTSBURGH, Pa. ‑ A resident of Pittsburgh, Pa., has been sentenced in federal court to 30 months in prison on his conviction of violating federal firearms laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
United States District Judge Terrence F. McVerry imposed the sentence on Jawan Barnett Coachman, a/k/a Darryl Clark, 26.
According to information presented to the court, on Jan. 8, 2008, during a routine traffic stop, Coachman, a convicted felon was found in possession of a Taurus, 9mm caliber pistol. Coachman was previously convicted in the Court of Common Pleas, Allegheny County on Sept. 5, 2000, of the crime of burglary. This is a crime that is punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year. Federal law prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year to possess a firearm.
Assistant United States Attorney Almon S. Burke, Jr. prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Jawan Barnett Coachman.
According to Mr. Hickton, this case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative effort by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and communities to prevent, deter and prosecute gun crime.
