Fayette County Woman Pleads Guilty To Unauthorized Receipt Of Social Security Benefits
PITTSBURGH, Pa. ‑ A resident of Smithfield, Pa., pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to a charge of social security fraud, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
Mary Catherine Sapp, 31, pleaded guilty on Oct. 21, 2010, to a one‑count indictment before United States Senior District Judge Alan N. Bloch.
In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that Sapp received Social Security benefits that she was not entitled to receive. The overpayment totaled $19,813.20.
Senior Judge Bloch scheduled sentencing for Feb. 10, 2011. The law provides for a total sentence of five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Nelson P. Cohen is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
The Office of the Inspector General for the Social Security Administration conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Mary Catherine Sapp.
