Guatemalan Charged With Violating Federal Immigration Laws
PITTSBURGH,Pa. ‑ One resident of Guatemala has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of violating federal immigration laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
The one-count indictment named Margarito Salaz-Chun, 39, a citizen of Guatemala, as the sole defendant.
According to the indictment presented to the court, on Sept. 10, 2010, Salaz-Chun, a citizen of Guatemala, was found in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. After having been removed from the United States on March 30, 2007, Salaz-Chun re-entered the United States without authorization from the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of two years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Constance M. Bowden is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
