JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - On Dec. 14, a resident of Somerset, Pa., was sentenced in federal court to five years probation and 200 hours of community service on his conviction of unlawful possession of firearms by a convicted felon, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson imposed the sentence on Kelly B. Shaulis, 43.

According to information presented to the court, on July 15, Aug. 7, and Dec. 1, 2008, Shaulis, who had been convicted in 2007 in Westmoreland County, Pa., of receiving stolen property, unlawfully possessed various firearms.  Federal law prohibits persons who have been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year from possessing ammunition or firearms.  Receiving stolen property is such a crime.

Assistant United States Attorney John J. Valkovci, Jr., prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.

U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Pa. State Police/Bureau of Criminal Investigation for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Shaulis.

According to Mr. Hickton, Shaulis was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative effort by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and communities to prevent, deter, and prosecute gun crime.
