Postal Employee Admits Stealing
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. ‑ A resident of Hyde, Pa., pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of misappropriation of postal funds United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
Lora K. Karp, 44, of Hyde, Pa., pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson.
In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that from Sept. 5, 2008, to Sept. 30, 2008, Karp received and converted to her own use approximately $5,143.51, while in the service and employment of the United States Postal Service.
Judge Gibson scheduled sentencing for June 21, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. The law provides for a total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
The United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Karp.
