JOHNSTOWN, Pa. ‑ A resident of Seward, Pa., pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of conversion of government funds United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

Kimberly Barelich-Berry, 46, pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson.

In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that from Sept. 19, 2002, to Jan. 1, 2005, Barelich-Berry falsely received and converted to her own use approximately $15,190, which represents approximately 27 separate Section 8 housing assistance subsidies from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development to which Barelich-Berry was not entitled.

Judge Gibson scheduled sentencing for Aug. 2, 2011, at 9:30 a.m.  The law provides for a total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.  Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of Inspector General, conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Barelich-Berry.
