Guatemala Sentenced To Time Served For Immigration Violation

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - On Sept. 2, 2011, a resident of Guatemala pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time served in federal court to a charge of violating federal immigration laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

Santos Lopez-Tomas, 26, of Guatemala, pleaded guilty to one count before Chief United States District Judge Gary L. Lancaster.

In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that on July10, 2011, Lopez-Tomas was found in Allegheny County, Pa., after having unlawfully re-entered the United States following removal on or about May 16, 2005.

Prior to imposing sentence, the Court noted that the defendant faces likely deportation.

Assistant United States Attorney Margaret E. Picking is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Lopez-Tomas.
