Felon Sentenced to 10 Years For Possession of a Firearm
ERIE, Pa. - A former resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced in federal court to 120 months in prison on his conviction of violating federal firearms laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
United States District Judge Sean J. McLaughlin imposed the sentence on Mekail Omar Jones, 24.
According to information presented to the court, Jones possessed a firearm while being a convicted felon. At the time he committed the offense, Jones resisted arrest and seriously injured an Erie Bureau of Police Officer.
Prior to imposing sentence, Judge McLaughlin stated that Jones was a violent recidivist, who presented a clear and present danger to this community. Judge McLaughlin commented on the rise in gun violence in the City of Erie and deemed it important to make clear that the possession of firearms by convicted felons in Erie comes with severe consequences.
Assistant United States Attorney Christine A. Sanner prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Erie Bureau of Police for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Jones.
