
Local Woman Pleads Guilty To Helping 39 Individuals File False Tax Returns
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of aiding and assisting in the filing of a false return and filing a false income tax return, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
Jamel Williams pleaded guilty to three counts before United States District Judge David S. Cercone.
In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that Williams willfully aided and assisted in, and advised the preparation and presentation to the Internal Revenue Service of U.S. Individual Income Tax Returns of 39 others which bore false Schedule A itemized deductions, Schedule C business expenses, child and dependant care expenses, and un-reimbursed employee business expenses. The tax loss associated with her conduct was approximately $197,000.00.
Judge Cercone scheduled sentencing for May3, 2012. The law provides for a total sentence of nine years in prison, a fine of $750,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Paul E. Hull is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
The Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Williams.
