Felon Sentenced for Illegally Possessing Firearms, Heroin
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A resident of Pittsburgh has been sentenced in federal court to 23 months incarceration and three years of supervised release on his conviction of violating federal firearms laws and narcotics laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
United States District Judge David S. Cercone imposed the sentence on Monty Griffin, 36.
According to information presented to the court, on May 27, 2010, Griffin possessed a firearm and on Aug. 19, 2010, Griffin possessed a firearm and possessed heroin with the intent to distribute it. Because Griffin has previously been convicted of offenses punishable by a term of imprisonment in excess of one year, federal law prohibits him from possessing a firearm.
Assistant United States Attorney Almon S. Burke, Jr. prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Griffin.
This case is being prosecuted under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative effort by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and communities to prevent, deter and prosecute gun crime.
