Pittsburgh Man Charged With Assaulting 3 Federal Workers
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A resident of Pittsburgh, Pa., has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on charges of assault, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
The three-count indictment, returned on March 6, named John Clarence Whetsel, 60, as the sole defendant.
According to the indictment, Whetsel assaulted a federal employee within the special territorial jurisdiction of the United States and assaulted two federal officers.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 19 years in prison, a fine of $600,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney James T. Kitchen is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security - Federal Protective Service conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
