Environmental Company Pleads Guilty, Fined for Unlawfully Transporting Hazardous Goods
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Field Environmental Instruments, Inc., of Pittsburgh, Pa., pleaded guilty and was sentenced in federal court to a charge of unlawful transportation of hazardous materials in air commerce, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
Field Environmental Instruments, Inc., pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Mark Hornak. In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that Field Environmental Instruments, Inc., shipped hazardous materials which are pressurized gases, to FedEx for transportation in air commerce without properly identifying and labeling them.
Following the company's guilty plea, Judge Hornak sentenced Field Environmental Instruments, Inc., to a fine of $96,000. In conjunction with this fine, Field Environmental Instruments, Inc., also paid $192,000 to the United States of America as a civil penalty, for a total payment of $288,000.
Assistant United States Attorneys Nelson P. Cohen prosecuted this case criminally and Assistant United States Attorney Paul E. Skirtich prosecuted this case civilly on behalf of the government.
Mr. Hickton commended the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Inspector General for conducting the investigation that led to the prosecution of Field Environmental Instruments, Inc.
