FEDERAL GRAND JURY INDICTS PROVIDENCE MAN FOR CONSPIRACY; OXYCODONE DISTRIBUTION

A federal grand jury on Wednesday returned a four-count indictment charging a Providence, R.I., man with one count of conspiracy, one count of possession with the intent to distribute oxycodone and two counts of distributing oxycodone pills. The indictment alleges that Ara Giragosian, 35, conspired to distribute oxycodone and did distribute oxycodone between December 3, 2009 and April 27, 2010.

Giragosian was arrested in April by way of a federal court complaint. He made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond and was released on $25,000 unsecured bond. Giragosian is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment on August 11, 2010.

If convicted, Giragosian faces up to 20 years federal imprisonment on each count, and supervised release up to life, with a mandatory minimum term of 3 years.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra R. Hebert. The matter was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), New England Field Division - Tactical Division Squad.

An indictment is merely an allegation and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
