GUN CHARGE NETS PROVIDENCE MAN 51 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Providence man was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Providence to 51 months in federal prison and 3 years supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Glenn Cannon, 31, who had previously been convicted of a felony, pleaded guilty in June 2010 to one count of a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The sentence, which was imposed by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Mary M. Lisi, was announced by U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha.

At the time of the defendant’s guilty plea, Assistant U.S. Attorney Luis M. Matos told the Court that in November 2009, while Providence Police were conducting surveillance of a Providence home for alleged drug activity, they watched as a person came out of the house and handed Cannon, who was sitting in his vehicle in the rear of the house, a white sock in the shape of a firearm. The vehicle then backed out of the driveway and drove away.

            As police followed, Cannon drove his vehicle past a school bus with its stop sign out and flashers on, later coming to a stop at a red traffic signal. Officers approached the vehicle at the stop light and removed Cannon.  They located the white sock, which contained a .22 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol and 4 rounds of ammunition, under the driver’s seat.  They also discovered a small quantity of illegal drugs, two cell phones and a pair of black gloves.

            The matter was investigated by Providence Police with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
