PROVIDENCE MAN SENTENCED IN FEDERAL FIREARM CASE

 

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Christopher Rene of Providence was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Providence to 46 months in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm, it was announced by United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha.

Rene, 20, pleaded guilty in December 2010 without a plea agreement before Chief Judge Mary M. Lisi. According to court documents and proceedings, on July 21, 2010, Providence Police were called to the area of Portland Street following reports of shots fired in the area. When police arrived, they saw a person matching the description of the individual given on the initial radio call running away.

The pursuing officer saw Rene take a gun from his waistband and throw it next to a fence. After Rene was in custody, the officer recovered the firearm, a revolver, which contained four spent rounds and four live rounds.

The matter was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Providence Police.

The matter was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephanie S. Browne and  Richard W. Rose.

Rene has been detained since his arrest.
