Providence Felon Pleads Guilty to Drug Trafficking, Firearms Charges

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -  Devon Isom, 23, of Providence, pleaded guilty in federal court in Providence today to possession with the intent to distribute 28 or more grams of crack cocaine and being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Providence Police Chief Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr.

Devon Isom faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years, and up to 50 years in federal prison when he is sentenced by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Mary M. Lisi on September 14, 2012.

According to information presentenced to the court, Providence Police Detectives executed a court authorized search of Isom’s residence on March 9, 2012. As detectives entered the apartment, Isom, who was seen manipulating a pot on a stove, quickly tossed the pot out an open window. Officers positioned outside the residence quickly recovered the pan, which contained 43.25 grams of crack cocaine.

A search of Isom’s residence resulted in the seizure of a loaded 9mm handgun located under a bedroom pillow, small amounts of crack cocaine and marijuana, four Ecstasy pills, and 27.5 Oxycodone pills. Detectives also seized $540 in cash from Isom’s person.

According to information presented to the court, Isom had previously been convicted of a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment of a term greater than one year. In 2009, Isom was sentenced in state court to serve one year of a six year sentence of imprisonment for attempted breaking and entering.
The matter was investigated by Providence Police, with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul F. Daly, Jr.
