Heroin Trafficker Sentenced to Nearly 10 Years in Federal Prison

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Luis A. Perez, 29, formerly of Woonsocket and Providence, was sentenced today to 115 months in federal prison for trafficking heroin. Perez was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Drug Task Force in February 2012.

U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell, Jr. also sentenced Perez to serve five years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. Perez pleaded guilty on April 6, 2012, to possession with the intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin.

Perez’s sentence was announced by United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Kevin L. Lane, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA.

According to information presented to the court, DEA Drug Task Force agents executed a court authorized search warrant at Perez’s Providence residence on February 9, 2012, and seized 139 grams of heroin, a drug ledger and other items related to the packaging and sale of heroin. The heroin had an estimated street value of at least $12,000.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra R. Hebert.

The DEA Drug Task Force is comprised of agents and law enforcement officers from the DEA, ATF, IRS, HSI-ICE, Rhode Island State Police, and Cranston, East Providence, Pawtucket, Providence, Newport, Warwick and Woonsocket Police Departments.
