Career Offender Sentenced to More than 12 1/2 Years in Federal Prison for Hobbs Act Robbery
Frederick Burdick attacked and attempted to rob a restaurant employee
of business receipts as she prepared to make a bank deposit
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Frederick Burdick, 26, of Warwick, a career criminal previously arrested and convicted in state court more than two-dozen times, including numerous convictions for crimes of violence such as assault, domestic violence and drug trafficking, was sentenced today in federal court to 151 months in federal prison for the attempted robbery of a North Kingstown restaurant employee as she was preparing to deposit business proceeds into a bank night deposit box.
At sentencing, U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith also ordered Burdick to serve three years supervised release upon completion of his prison sentence. Burdick pleaded guilty on August 6, 2012, to Hobbs Act Robbery.
Burdick’s sentence was announced by United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha and North Kingstown Police Chief Thomas J. Mulligan.
At the time of his guilty plea, Burdick admitted to the court that on January 10, 2012, while wearing dark clothing and a ski mask, he positioned himself between a bank’s night deposit box and the woman’s vehicle, forced the car window open and struck the woman several times in an unsuccessful attempt to steal a bank deposit bag containing restaurant receipts she was about to deposit. Prior to fleeing, Burdick reached inside the vehicle and removed the victim’s car keys and a cell phone. The victim reported seeing a gun and was treated for head injuries inflicted by Burdick.
According to information presented to the court, fingerprints retrieved by North Kingstown Police from the driver’s side window of the vehicle matched fingerprints on file belonging to Burdick. He was arrested on January 24, 2012, by the Rhode Island State Police Fugitive Task Force.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gerard B. Sullivan.
The matter was investigated by North Kingstown Police with the assistance of the FBI and Rhode Island State Police.
