Providence Felon Sentenced on Drug Trafficking, Firearms Charges

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Devin Isom, 23, of Providence, was sentenced to 72 months incarceration by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Mary M. Lisi in federal court in Providence today.  On June 26, 2012, Isom pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 28 or more grams of crack cocaine and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Providence Police Chief Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr.  U.S. District Court Chief Judge Lisi also sentenced Isom to five years supervised release upon his release from prison.

At the change of plea hearing on June 26, 2012, Isom admitted that he possessed 43.25 grams of crack cocaine on March 9, 2012.  He also admitted that he possessed a loaded 9mm handgun, additional quantities of crack cocaine and marijuana, four Ecstasy pills, and 27.5 Oxycodone pills.  Detectives also seized $540 in cash from Isom’s person.

According to information presented to the court, Isom had previously been convicted of a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment of a term greater than one year.  In 2009, Isom was sentenced in state court to serve one year of a six year sentence of imprisonment for attempted breaking and entering.

The matter was investigated by Providence Police, with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul F. Daly, Jr.
