Illinois Man Sentenced for Failure to Pay Legal Child Support

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Staunton, Illinois, man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on December 28, 2010, by Chief US District Judge Karen E. Schreier. Christopher W. Rivers, age 33, was sentenced to five years of probation, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $18,423.72.

Rivers was indicted for failing to pay over $17,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on June 3, 2010. Rivers was ordered by the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Court to pay $400 per month for his minor child. At the time of indictment, he had not made a child support payment since January 2008, and his child support arrearage was $17,077.28. He pled guilty to the charge on October 1, 2010.

This case was investigated the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorney Thomas J. Wright prosecuted the case.
