Rosebud Man Pled Not Guilty to Assault by Striking, Beating, and Wounding

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rosebud, South Dakota, man has been charged by an information for unlawfully assaulting a female in Todd County on March 6, 2011.

Steven Nichols, age 40, was charged by an information on March 14, 2011, for Assault by Striking, Beating and Wounding. He appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on March 24, 2011, and pled not guilty to the information. The maximum penalty upon conviction is six months of imprisonment, a $5,000 fine, and a $10 assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund. Restitution may also be ordered. The charge is merely an accusation, and Nichols is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by Rosebud Law Enforcement Services. Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher is prosecuting the case. Nichols was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
