Rosebud Man Pleads Guilty to Assault by Striking, Beating and Wounding

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Steven Nichols, age 40, of Rosebud, South Dakota, appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 1, 2011, and pled guilty to an information that charged him with Assault by Striking, Beating and Wounding. The maximum penalty upon conviction is six months of imprisonment, a $5,000 fine, and a $10 assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The charge relates to Nichols unlawfully assaulting a female at South Antelope in Todd County on March 6, 2011. The investigation was conducted by Rosebud Law Enforcement Services. The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Matthew L. Rappold, Rosebud’s Chief Tribal Prosecutor, and Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for June 1, 2011. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
