United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Eagle Butte man charged with Assaulting a Federal Officer was sentenced on June 20, 2011, by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Tyler J. Peterson, age 30, was sentenced to six months in custody, six months of home confinement, two years of supervised release, $2,436.96 in restitution, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

Peterson was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 13, 2010. The charge stems from an incident that occurred on October 16, 2010, during a traffic stop, when Peterson drove his vehicle in reverse toward a Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services vehicle while it was parked behind Peterson's truck, causing $2,436.96 in damages. Peterson pled guilty to the charge on March 28, 2011.

This case was investigated by Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant United States Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers prosecuted the case.

Peterson was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal.
