United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Lander, Wyoming, man was indicted by a federal grand jury on a Superseding Indictment for Aggravated Sexual Abuse, Abusive Sexual Contact, Witness Tampering, and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.
Nathan I. Eastman, age 31, appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on August 30, 2011, and pled not guilty to the five count superseding indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to life in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both. Restitution may also be ordered. The charges are related to the suspect’s alleged abuse of a child from January 1999 to February 2001 in Corson County. The charges are merely accusations, and Eastman is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency. Assistant United States Attorney Britt Haxton is prosecuting the case.
Eastman was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal. A trial date has been set for October 11, 2011.
