United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Mission, South Dakota, woman charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon was sentenced on October 4, 2011, by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Alverna Eastman, age 52, was sentenced to 27 months in custody, 2 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
Eastman was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 10, 2011, and pled guilty to the charge on July 7, 2011.
The charge relates to a domestic disturbance that occurred on February 13, 2011, when Eastman cut two men with a knife. She stabbed her brother in the shoulder and cut her husband on the hand.
This case was investigated by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case.
Eastman was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal.
