US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Gulfport, Mississippi, man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on May 2, 2011, by US District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Patrick P. Reed, Jr., age 28, was sentenced to one year of probation, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $15,366.47.
Reed was indicted for failing to pay over $15,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on October 6, 2009. He was ordered by the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court, Pennington County, South Dakota, to pay $330 per month for his minor child, commencing May 15, 2005. At the time of indictment, Patrick Reed had not made a child support payment since April 2007. On January 14, 2009, the defendant's parental rights were terminated and the minor child was adopted by the stepfather. As of the indictment date, the total arrearage amount was $15,933. Reed pled guilty to the charge on May 2, 2011.
