US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Columbia, South Carolina, man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on June 13, 2011, by US District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Hamp L. Sumter, Jr., age 43, was sentenced to five years of unsupervised supervision, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $8,414.89.
Sumter was indicted for failing to pay over $8,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on December 1, 2009. He was ordered by the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court, Pennington County, South Dakota, to pay $189 per month for his minor child, commencing January 15, 2001. The support was subsequently modified to $150 per month commencing September 1, 2002. At the time of indictment, he had not made a child support payment since August 2006, and the total arrearage amount was $8,208.27. He pled guilty to the charge on June 13, 2011.
This case was investigated the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorneys Thomas J. Wright and Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case.
