United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Wanblee, South Dakota, man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly stealing a TV, DVDs, and CDs from a recreational vehicle on April 25, 2011. He is also charged with going back on April 26, 2011, and stealing a vehicle.
Jeffrey Chipps, age 21, was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 22, 2011, for First Degree Burglary and Larceny. He appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on July 21, 2011, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 25 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. The charges are merely accusations, and Chipps is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Chipps was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal. A trial date has been set for September 27, 2011.
