Agency Village Woman Sentenced for Health Care Fraud

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Agency Village woman charged with Health Care Fraud was sentenced on May 16, 2011, by US District Judge Charles B. Kornmann. Amanda Marie Adams, age 25, was sentenced to 18 months of probation, restitution in the amount of $35, a $250 fine, and a $100 assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

Adams was indicted for Obtaining Controlled Substances by Fraud and Health Care Fraud by a federal grand jury on August 3, 2010, and she pled guilty to Health Care Fraud on February 7, 2011.

Adams committed her crime while working as a pharmacy technician at the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Health Care Center in Sisseton, South Dakota. Between August 1, 2008, and January 31, 2009, she stole quantities of Hydrocodone, a Schedule III controlled substance, from the Indian Health Services facility by acting as though she was disposing of or restocking quantities of the drug she found in unclaimed prescriptions and canceled supplies when she was actually taking and keeping the drug for her own use.

This case was investigated by the US Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorney Kevin Koliner prosecuted the case.
