
Iowa Man Sentenced for Failure to Pay Legal Child Support

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Spirit Lake, Iowa, man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on June 20, 2011, by Chief US District Judge Karen E. Schreier. Jason D. Schomaker, age 36, was sentenced to five years of probation, six months of home confinement, a $100 special assessment to the Victim's Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $41,703.14. Schomaker was indicted for failing to pay over $36,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on August 3, 2010. He was ordered to pay $328 per month for his minor children, commencing May 21, 1999. Said support was subsequently modified several times and is currently $480 per month. At the time of indictment, he had not made a child support payment since November 2008, and the total arrearage amount was $36,449.51. He pled guilty to the charge on April 5, 2011. This case was investigated the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorney Thomas J. Wright prosecuted the case. |
