
Minnesota Man Sentenced for Failure to Pay Legal Child Support

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Minneapolis, Minnesota, man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on June 20, 2011, by Chief US District Judge Karen E. Schreier. Michael A. Smith, age 36, was sentenced to five years of probation, four months of home confinement, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assessment Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $13,771.52. Smith was indicted for failing to pay over $14,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on January 4, 2011. He was ordered by the Fourth Judicial Division, Family Court Division, Hennepin County, Minnesota, to pay $309 per month for his minor child, commencing July 1, 2004. Said support has been amended several times and is currently $341 per month. At the time of indictment, the total arrearage amount was $14,411.28. He pled guilty to the charge on June 20, 2011.
