Colorado Man Sentenced for Failure to Pay Legal Child Support

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Colorado Springs man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on December 19, 2011, by Chief US District Judge Karen E. Schreier. John R. Monroe, IV, age 53, was sentenced to 8 months of confinement in the Glory House, 5 years of probation, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $40,373.88.

Monroe was indicted for failing to pay over $33,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on September 8, 2010. He was ordered by the Third Judicial Circuit Court, Lake County, South Dakota, to pay $700 per month for his minor children, commencing November 5, 2003. Said support was subsequently modified to $438 per month. At the time of indictment, he had not made a child support payment since August of 2006, and the total arrearage amount was $33,843.88. He pled guilty to the charge on September 28, 2011.

This case was investigated the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorney Thomas J. Wright prosecuted the case.
