United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Roger Watts, age 28, of Mission, South Dakota, appeared before United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange on February 6, 2012, and pled guilty to Assaulting a Federal Officer. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 8 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both.

The charge stems from an incident on November 27, 2011, when a law enforcement officer responded to a call to remove Watts from a residence. Watts resisted arrest by fleeing out the back door of the residence and also wrestling with the officer.

The investigation was conducted by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for April 30, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.
