U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Winner man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.

Burton W. King, age 51, was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2012. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on March 12, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment, a $250,00 fine or both, and a mandatory period of at least 5 years up to life of supervised release. The charge is merely an accusation, and King is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the United States Marshal’s Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case. King was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
