Rosebud Woman Arraigned on Charges of Theft from Indian Tribal Organization and Aiding and Abetting

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rosebud, South Dakota, woman has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Theft from Indian Tribal Organization and Aiding and Abetting.
Tanya Walking Eagle, age 38, was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 13, 2012.

She appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on March 20, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 5 years’ custody, a $250,000 fine, or both. Restitution may also be ordered. The charges are merely accusations, and Walking Eagle is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the Office of Inspector General - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, United States Attorney's Office, and Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher. Walking Eagle was released on bond.
