United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Joseph Cloudman, age 30, of Rosebud, South Dakota, appeared before United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange on April 11, 2012, and pled guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both.
The conviction stems from an incident that took place on October 13, 2010, when Cloudman punched the victim in the face, causing her to suffer a broken jaw and other broken facial bones. The victim had three medical procedures to repair the injuries.
The investigation was conducted by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for July 2, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.
