U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Miranda Walters, age 24, of Eagle Butte, appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on May 1, 2012, and pled guilty to the indictment that charged her with Embezzlement and Theft from an Indian Tribal Organization. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 5 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine or both.
The conviction stems from Walters, an employee of Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Telephone Authority, Subway Store #52697, taking cash from the cash register, when others within the store were too busy to notice, on four or five different occasions which totaled over $3,000.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Seiler.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for July 17, 2012. The defendant was released on bond pending sentencing.
