Lower Brule Man Arraigned on Charges of Third Degree Burglary and Larceny

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Lower Brule man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Third Degree Burglary and Larceny.

Tyler Walters, age 24, was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2012. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on May 7, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment on the burglary charge and 5 years’ imprisonment on the larceny charge. Both charges include a maximum penalty of $250,000 fine and a period of supervised release of 3 years.

The charges are merely accusations, and Walters is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case. Walters was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date of June 25, 2012, has been set.
