Mexican Citizen Sentenced for Illegal Reentry

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Mexican citizen charged with Illegal Reentry was sentenced on June 11, 2012, by United States District Judge Charles B. Kornmann. Manuel Cortez-Flores, a/k/a Manuel Flores-Cortez, a/k/a Hugo Flores-Flores, age 27, was sentenced to 12 months in custody and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

Flores-Cortez was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 24, 2012. The conviction arose from an incident in January 2012 when Walworth County law enforcement officials arrested a person using the name Hugo Flores-Flores for Possession of a Forged Instrument. During an interview with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the defendant stated that his true name was Manuel Cortez-Flores and that he was a citizen of Mexico. The man also admitted he had previously been removed from Tacoma, Washington, to Mexico. Further investigation by ICE and a fingerprint match through NCIC proved that Flores-Flores, Manuel Cortez-Flores, and Manuel Flores-Cortez are the same person and that he had been removed from Tacoma, Washington, in August 2011. He pled guilty on April 23, 2012.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Assistant United States Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case.

Cortez-Flores was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal to begin serving his sentence.
